Although the utilization of cannabis has been documented as far back as ancient times, the earliest mention of the name “marijuana” dates back to more recent times and has dubious origins.

The term “marijuana,” which is an anglicization of the Spanish words “marihuana” or “mariguana,” does not appear to have been in use in the United States before to 1910. The history of cannabis in the United States can be traced back to Mexican immigrants, who are frequently credited with bringing the practice of cannabis use for recreational purposes to the country in the early 20th century. However, the history is convoluted.

Even if the consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes was initially lawful, the very first measure in the United States to prohibit the growing of marijuana in order to restrict production was approved in 1913. This, in turn, paved the way for the full-on prohibition that came about during the Great Depression in the 1930s. This is something that is now frequently characterized as a form of oppression against Mexicans and other minority and immigrant populations in the United States. [Citation needed] [Citation needed]

There is a school of thought that holds that the political and racial mechanizations that lie behind cannabis prohibition were the driving force behind the term marijuana’s introduction into popular usage in the United States. Even though the term “marijuana” is still commonly used in the United States, the complexities surrounding the drug’s roots have not been resolved.
